Frequently Asked Questions About Pediatric Dentistry

How long do dental sealants last?

Dental sealants can last up to 10 years, but they may chip or wear off before then, particularly in children who grind their teeth or have biting habits.

Is it normal to put crowns on baby teeth?

While you likely think of crowns as a dental treatment for adults, it is completely normal to put crowns on baby teeth that have more decay than can be repaired with a filling. By placing a crown, we eliminate the need for a space maintainer and prevent the spread of decay and painful infection.

At what age can you get a root canal?

Children can receive root canals at any age, but a root canal is performed differently when it involves a baby tooth, as the root does not extend as deep into the gum and jawbone as it does with an adult tooth.

Does a space maintainer hurt?

Space maintainers do not hurt. They’re simply used to ensure that adjacent teeth do not drift into the space left open by a tooth that has fallen out too early.

Is nitrous oxide safe?

Because nitrous oxide is inhaled and wears off so quickly, it is considered one of the safest sedatives for pediatric patients. Some patients may experience nausea while inhaling nitrous oxide, but there are no serious side effects.
